If you can only visit one villa on Lake Como, make it this one. Villa del Balbianello is the one you've already seen on screen, in Star Wars and in James Bond Casino Royale.
It sits on its own little peninsula in Lenno. Cardinal Durini built it in the late 1700s, and the explorer Guido Monzino, the last private owner, left it to FAI in 1988. It's about 70 km from Milan. Park in Lenno and walk up through the woods (25 minutes), or take a taxi boat from Lido di Lenno. Book your tickets online in advance, it's closed on Mondays and Wednesdays.
