Palacio de la Magdalena, Santander

Construction of this majestic palace began in 1908; it is now regarded as one of the most iconic buildings in the city of Santander. Situated at the head of the Magdalena peninsula, it served as the summer residence of King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia.

Since 1933, it has been the headquarters of the Menéndez Pelayo International University and also serves as a conference and meeting centre.

During the summer, the Magdalena Palace hosts various courses run by the Menéndez Pelayo International University and, throughout its history, has hosted a range of events, such as ministerial summits. The Palace is an architectural blend of various styles and influences, primarily English and French, as well as Neo-Mountain and Modernist.

The result is a slender and elegant building. Inside, the main staircase and the various reception rooms are particularly noteworthy. It also houses a significant collection of furniture, photographs and paintings from the period when the palace served as a royal residence.

Among the paintings on display are works by masters of the period, such as Sorolla. Guided tours are available by prior appointment, which can be booked via the Palace’s own website.

Furthermore, the palace is surrounded by extensive gardens which are also well worth exploring to enjoy some beautiful views of the cliffs. In fact, the Magdalena Peninsula boasts other tourist attractions, such as an open-air marine park, the La Cerda lighthouse, the Royal Stables and the beaches of La Magdalena and Bikini. There is a tourist train that runs around the Magdalena Peninsula.
