Catedral Santa María la Real de la Almudena
Catedral Santa María la Real de la Almudena · Madrid
Por Spain ·

Towards the end of the 19th century, work began on the Almudena Cathedral on the site of the former church of Santa María la Mayor, built to honour the patron saint of Madrid. In 1883, the foundation stone was laid for this impressive monument, situated in one of the city’s most beautiful locations.
In 1911, the crypt was opened for worship, but construction came to a standstill until after the Civil War, when the commission was awarded to the architects Fernando Chueca Goitia and Carlos Sidro, who gave the project a decisive boost.
Despite this, the construction process was very slow, although eventually, in 1993, the cathedral was consecrated by His Holiness Pope John Paul II. The interior of the cathedral is in the Gothic style, whilst the exterior is classical.
