Castillo de Santa Bárbara, Alicante

It is situated on Mount Benacantil, a location which gives it enormous strategic value. It acquired its name because, on the feast day of Saint Barbara, it was captured from the Arabs by Prince Alfonso of Castile. The castle was renovated during the reign of Philip II.

Throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the castle was subjected to numerous bombardments. It was opened to the public in 1963, and in the same year the two lifts that run through the interior of the mountain were inaugurated.

The castle is divided into three sections: the Torreta, where the old keep is situated; the middle section, which houses the most important rooms, including the Hall of Philip II and the Parade Ground; and the lower enclosure, dating from the 18th century, where the Revellín del Bon Repós is situated.
