Yacimiento de Atapuerca, Burgos

Atapuerca is one of the most important palaeontological sites in Europe. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 2000 and recognised as a Site of Outstanding Universal Value in 2015 by UNESCO.

The Atapuerca palaeontological site is one of the most important in Europe, as it provides evidence of the presence and way of life of hominids dating back a million years. The site is situated in the small municipality of Atapuerca, located some 20 km north-east of the city of Burgos.

In the Sima de los Huesos, the remains of at least 32 individuals of different ages and both sexes have been found, making it one of the best-known samples of a population from that period. In 2000, the site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
