Ciudad Romana Baelo Claudia, Cádiz

Its archaeological significance stems from the large number of preserved features that provide a comprehensive picture of the Roman polis.

This prosperous city was founded in the late 2nd century BC. The street layout is rectangular, with two main thoroughfares – one horizontal and the other vertical – intersecting at the forum. The curia, the basilica and the buildings housing the city’s administrative functions are situated at this point.

The lower part of the site comprises the monumental quarter, with the theatre situated on the steepest slope to make the most of the natural incline of the ground in the construction of the tiers. It is believed that the dwellings of the common people may have been located in the upper part.

The salting works for the famous ‘garum’ – which brought Baelo Claudia its renown – are still preserved, as are the market, the thermal baths and one of the three aqueducts that supplied the town with water. It was declared an Archaeological Site by the Regional Government of Andalusia in 1989.
