Plaza Mayor de Madrid, Madrid

The Plaza Mayor is a must-see symbol of Madrid. Construction of this vast square, situated in the city centre, began in the 17th century on the orders of King Philip III, whose bronze equestrian statue adorns the square. Opened in 1620, it is a rectangular square lined with arcades.

In times gone by, this square was the venue for numerous public events, such as bullfights, processions, festivals, theatre performances, Inquisition trials and even executions. Beneath its arcades, there are traditional shops, as well as a multitude of bars and restaurants.

Some of the buildings in the square are particularly noteworthy, such as the Casa de la Panadería, with its striking frescoes on the façade, and the Casa de la Carnicería.
