Barrio de las Letras
Barrio de las Letras · Madrid
Por Spain ·

The Barrio de las Letras is a neighbourhood in the centre of Madrid where some of Spain’s greatest literary figures have lived and written. Today, it is an area that combines literature, bohemian life, entertainment, shopping and fine dining.
The neighbourhood consists of narrow streets – either pedestrianised or with restricted vehicle access – and pleasant squares such as Plaza de Santa Ana. Here, it is easy to find the houses where such important figures of Spain’s Golden Age of Literature as Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Góngora and Cervantes lived and wrote.
Furthermore, the pavements of various streets feature inscriptions and short excerpts from the works of some of these writers. Another of the charms of the Barrio de las Letras is its wide range of shops, ranging from the most traditional establishments with centuries of history (such as shoemakers, silversmiths and luthiers) to modern and avant-garde venues.
Similarly, the area is full of restaurants and outdoor terraces where you can enjoy Madrid’s cuisine and Spain’s popular ‘tapas’ culture.
Finally, the neighbourhood’s location is unbeatable for exploring Madrid’s cultural scene, as it is home to the CaixaForum and is situated close to the Prado Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, as well as iconic landmarks such as the Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor.
