Cueva El Soplao, Santander

El Soplao is situated in the western part of Cantabria, in the Saja-Nansa region. At present, some 20 kilometres of natural passages have been documented, to which must be added nearly 30 kilometres of mining tunnels.

It was discovered in the early 20th century during mining operations at La Florida and is one of the major attractions for underground tourism due to the spectacular array of unusual rock formations it contains. The term ‘soplao’ refers to the draught of fresh air that forms when a mining tunnel intersects with a natural cave passage.

Hence the name of this spectacular cave. Visitors can access it via a replica mining train that runs from an outdoor station to an indoor platform; from there, the cave tour is always on foot.

The most notable galleries are La Gorda, Los Fantasmas and La Ópera. This type of tour is suitable for all visitors; it is led by a guide and lasts approximately one hour.

In addition, an adventure tourism tour is available for the more intrepid. Over two and a half hours, you can enjoy the experience of becoming a caver – at least for a day – and explore the Galerías de Campamento, El Órgano and El Bosque.

The organisers provide all the necessary equipment (helmet with headlamp, overalls and wellington boots). This activity is suitable for those aged 12 and over.
