Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid

The Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum opened to the public in 1990, with a significant collection of Spanish and international art, spanning the period from the late 19th century to the present day. Two years later, Pablo Picasso’s *Guernica* was added to the collection, a seminal work that shapes the museum’s discourse and activities.

Housed in a former late 18th-century hospital designed by the architect Francesco Sabatini, the growth of its collection made an extension necessary, and in 2005 the new building designed by Jean Nouvel was inaugurated.

Drawing on the 25,000 works that make up the museum’s holdings, the collection has been reorganised in recent years, creating an exhibition route that explores the museum’s defining features, such as Surrealism, the 1937 Pavilion of the Republic and Spanish Informalism of the 1950s within an international context.

The Reina Sofía is also a centre for research, experimentation and reflection, offering a wide-ranging programme of temporary exhibitions and public activities.
