Barrio Gótico
Barrio Gótico · Barcelona
Por Spain ·

The Gothic Quarter is the oldest part of Barcelona, a central area of the city made up of narrow streets and squares that reflect Barcelona’s medieval past, with its Gothic palaces, residences and churches.
It is one of Barcelona’s most attractive areas, and its streets are dotted with medieval buildings such as the City Hall and the Catalan Government buildings, Barcelona Cathedral, and the Gothic churches of Santa Maria del Pi and Sant Just i Pastor. It is also home to the Jewish Quarter, formed by a network of narrow streets where part of the old synagogue is still preserved.
Its streets radiate out from several squares, notably Plaça de Sant Jaume, Plaça del Rei and Plaça Reial. The first is the political heart of Barcelona and is home to the City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat.
For its part, the monumental complex of Plaça del Rei is perhaps Barcelona’s finest example of medieval architecture, featuring the Palau Reial Major, part of the ancient Roman wall, the Palau del Lloctinent (Lieutenant’s Palace) and the City History Museum. Finally, Plaça Reial is a beautifully arcaded square that is very popular, especially at dusk due to its range of restaurants and bars.
This neighbourhood has been the heart of the city since Roman times and, in fact, is home to the Roman necropolis (Plaza Vila de Madrid); nearby, you can see the remains of the Roman Temple of Augustus.
