Alcázar de Segovia · Segovia
Por Spain ·

Situated at the confluence of the rivers Eresma and Clamores, the earliest written record of its existence is Christian and dates from the early 12th century.
It was built on a rock, which suggests its original military purpose. It served as a residence for Alfonso VIII. In the 13th century, the building took on a Gothic appearance following alterations carried out by the architects of John II and Henry IV.
The final phase of its architectural development took place in 1587, under the direction of the architect Francisco de Mora, possibly in collaboration with Juan de Herrera, who designed the Main Courtyard and the School of Honour. In 1764, Charles III established the Royal College of Artillery here. The building has numerous secret passageways leading down to the river and connecting to some of the city’s palaces.
