La Boqueria, Barcelona

In the heart of La Rambla lies the Mercat de Sant Josep, better known as La Boqueria. It is Barcelona’s most famous and picturesque market.

This iconic part of the city, which occupies what was once the courtyard of the old church of Sant Josep, was opened in 1836. Originally, the market was open-air, consisting of stalls run by street vendors and farmers who sold their produce directly on the street. But it was in 1914 that the market was finally covered.

The exterior of La Boqueria is made of metal and glass. But it is the interior that really catches the eye and makes this market – renowned for the quality and variety of its produce from all over the world – a must-visit destination.

The best way to soak up its unique atmosphere is to stroll amongst the stalls selling fruit and vegetables, fish and meat, pop into the bars and restaurants, and enjoy the mix of sounds, smells and flavours.
