Monasterio de Montserrat
Monasterio de Montserrat · Barcelona
Por Spain ·

Devotion to this Virgin spread throughout Latin America when the monk Bernat Boil accompanied Christopher Columbus to the New World.
It is said that an image of the Virgin of Montserrat appeared in a cave in the mountain. Situated 20 kilometres north-west of Barcelona, the monastery was founded by Abbot Oliba in 1025, although there is evidence that as early as 888 there was a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God.
In the 12th century, the Romanesque church was built and, in 1223, Europe’s first boys’ choir was established. Pope Leo XIII declared the Virgin of Montserrat the patron saint of Catalonia. In 1500, Saint Ignatius of Loyola arrived there as a pilgrim.
