Barrio del Albaicín, Granada

On a tour of this neighbourhood in Granada, we shall come across the churches of San Cristóbal and San Bartolomé, as well as their respective cisterns. These are not the only ones; we will also find the San Luis cistern and the one in Plaza del Salvador, situated at the start of Cuesta del Chapiz, as well as the cisterns of Las Tomasas and El Rey, the latter being the largest in the whole of Granada.

The Albaicín Wall dates from the Nasrid period. It was built in the second half of the 14th century to defend the neighbourhoods situated on the hill of San Cristóbal – Albaicín and AlbaydaIba.

It runs from the Puerta de Guadix, at the end of what is now the Paseo de los Tristes, passing through San Miguel Alto, the Puerta de Fajalauza and the Postigo de San Lorenzo, until it reaches the Puerta de Elvira. The Fajalauza Gate, also known as the Almendros Gate, connected the Albaicín neighbourhood with that of Los Alfareros.

On this route, we also pass the Casa Morisca de Yanguas and the churches of El Salvador, built in the Mudejar style in the 16th century on the site of the former Great Mosque of the Albaicín. The route is rounded off by the Bibalbonud Tower and Cistern, the San Nicolás Viewpoint and the Hizna Román Gate.
