Castillo de San José de Guadalest, Alicante

The castle is situated at the top of the village. It dates back to the 11th century, although the surviving remains are from the 12th century. It is divided into two parts, one of which was used as the local cemetery, whilst the other served to defend the village.

It was once a settlement for Muslims. It later became part of the Crown of Aragon. Most of the remains that still exist date from this period, specifically the reign of Peter IV.

It is not very well preserved, as most of the castle was destroyed by two earthquakes. This fortress is unique in that it once housed the entire town; the whole town formed part of the castle, which is surrounded by mountains.

In 1993, the castle was purchased from the Marquises of the town. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. Notable features within the walled enclosure include the parish church, the Casa Orduña – now a museum – and the prison.
