Castillo de Soutomaior, Pontevedra

This imposing fortress-palace is an extraordinary architectural, museum and botanical complex, which also boasts a camellia garden of international excellence.

Soutomaior Castle is situated in the Verdugo River valley, a few kilometres from the city of Pontevedra. Half medieval fortress, half 19th-century neo-Gothic palace, the complex comprises two towers linked by a residential building and a parade ground surrounded by a double wall.

Since its origins in the 12th century, various reconstructions and restorations over time have transformed its architecture into the monumental complex that can be visited today. Inside, a cutting-edge exhibition offers an educational and entertaining insight into its history and significance.

Designed to appeal to both adults and children, the tour uses audiovisuals, 3D recreations, video-mapping installations and ‘magic boxes’ to illustrate the castle’s evolution and the illustrious figures who lived there. The complex also boasts a beautiful natural setting comprising 25 hectares of woodland and gardens, which is regarded as Galicia’s most important botanical park.

Three different walking routes allow visitors to explore this extraordinary landscape, where centuries-old trees from different parts of the world grow alongside native species, vineyards, fruit trees and a valuable collection of camellias, recognised in 2012 as a Garden of International Camellia Excellence by the International Camellia Society.

In addition, dramatised tours, temporary exhibitions and themed guided tours are organised at different times of the year.
