Monasterio de Santo Domingo de Silos
Monasterio de Santo Domingo de Silos · Burgos
Por Spain ·

The building is situated in the area known as Valle de Tabladillo. It may have been founded around the 7th century. In 1088, a Romanesque church was consecrated; this was later replaced by a Neoclassical church designed by Ventura Rodríguez.
The cloister that remains is the Romanesque one, with a square plan and two storeys of arcades. The capitals of the lower cloister feature profuse symbolic decoration including dragons, centaurs, basket-weavers, mermaids, etc. The corners of the cloister are adorned with scenes from the life of Christ in enormous reliefs.
Also of note is the monastery’s archive, which houses fragments of the 10th-century Beatus, a leaf from the Bible of Oña, other fragments of Visigothic manuscripts, and musical fragments from some twenty codices in Aquitanian notation.
