Catedral de Burgos, Burgos

It stands out for the elegance and harmony of its lines, and is the only cathedral in Spain to have been designated, in its own right, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Although the Gothic style predominates, the cathedral also incorporates other artistic styles, as its construction spanned the period from 1221 to 1765. The main façade is the Puerta del Perdón, featuring a star-shaped rose window and a gallery of statues of the kings of Castile. On either side stand the 84-metre towers, crowned by magnificent 15th-century openwork spires.

However, the most beautiful sculptural ensemble is that of the Puerta del Sarmental, featuring an image of the Pantocrator surrounded by the apostles and evangelists. Inside, the dome of the central nave stands out, topped with a beautiful Mudejar vault, beneath which lie the remains of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid Campeador, and his wife, Doña Jimena.

Nearby is the beautiful Golden Staircase by Diego de Siloé, built in the 16th century and inspired by the Italian Renaissance. On either side are 19 chapels, the most notable of which are the Chapel of the Condestables and the Chapel of Saint Tecla.

You can also admire its valuable works of art: a unique collection that includes, amongst other items, altarpieces, paintings, choir stalls, tombs and sculptures.
