Catedral de Girona
Catedral de Girona · Girona
Por Spain ·

Girona Cathedral has the widest Gothic nave in the world. It was originally designed to have three naves, but the decision to build it as a single nave led to the suspension of the works and a dispute that lasted 50 years.
To reach the main entrance, you must climb a grand staircase dating from the late 17th century. The main façade is Baroque, whilst the cloister dates from the 12th century, the bell tower from the 11th and the rest of the building from the 14th. The cloister is vast in size, with a trapezium-shaped floor plan determined by the wall to which it is attached.
Inside, works of great beauty and value are preserved. The altarpiece of the high altar, made of silver, enamels and precious stones, is one of the jewels of Spanish goldsmithing. The capital columns in the cloister feature scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
The Tapestry of the Creation is an important example of Romanesque tapestry. A Beatus of Liébana is also preserved here.
