Palacio Real de La Granja de San Ildefonso
Palacio Real de La Granja de San Ildefonso · Segovia
Por Spain ·

Henry IV built a hunting lodge here in 1450 and, later, the Catholic Monarchs donated the property to the Hieronymite monks of El Parral. It was in the 18th century that Philip V, the first Spanish king of the Bourbon dynasty, built the Royal Palace of San Ildefonso.
It is a magnificent example of European palatial architecture. Its gardens and fountains are in the Versailles style, with constant references to legends and mythology, and the rooms are decorated with Carrara marble, Japanese lacquerwork and crystal chandeliers. Its name derives from an old farm belonging to the Hieronymite monks.
