Santuario de Covadonga · Oviedo
Por Spain ·

Covadonga is the place where the Reconquista began under King Pelayo, who is buried in the cave next to La Santina. It is the gateway to the Picos de Europa National Park.
The basilica, next to the cave where the image of La Santina is venerated, is a place of worship and pilgrimage for all Asturians. The basilica is a Neo-Romanesque building, with two tall towers flanking the main entrance.
Inside, it houses works of great value, such as a painting by Madrazo. In the square in front of the basilica stands the statue of King Pelayo.
In a cave, accessed via a grand staircase, lie the image of La Santina, the tomb of King Pelayo and that of King Alfonso I. A waterfall flows from the grotto, and at its base stands a fountain with seven spouts. On the altar, a gold panel depicts the Battle of Covadonga.
