The castle is situated on the highest point of Trujillo. It was built in the 13th century on the site of an ancient Arab fortress dating from the 9th or 10th century. It retains the square towers typical of Islamic military architecture. It is built of rubble stone and mortar, and comprises two parts: the Patio de Armas and the Albacara.
