Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata-Níjar, Almería

Cabo de Gata is situated at the south-eastern tip of the province of Almería. Its coastline is dotted with cliffs, coves and beaches. This natural park, which was also designated a biosphere reserve in 1997, encompasses the whole of Cabo de Gata, as well as part of its surrounding area.

The Sierra de Cabo de Gata is of volcanic origin and its landscape is characterised by pinnacles, dikes, calderas, cornices and domes. This unique geological formation results in one of the most scenically stunning coastal stretches in the Spanish Mediterranean.

In the southern part of the reserve lie the coastal salt flats, a site of vital importance for numerous migratory birds. The summer season is particularly notable for the arrival of various species, including flamingos, waders and gulls.

The vegetation is characterised by scrub and herbaceous formations, many of which are native. Furthermore, species such as the scorpionfish, the rockfish and the wrasse are found on the seabed.

As well as covering the entire area of the Natural Park and its surroundings, the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Biosphere Reserve has been designated a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and is listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.
