Murallas de Ávila
Murallas de Ávila · Ávila
Por Spain ·

The walled enclosure dates back to medieval times. The wall served to control the entry of provisions and the movement of goods, and to isolate the city from potential plagues and epidemics, as well as fulfilling a defensive role.
Its layout is that of an irregular rectangle and it is fortified with towers and turrets crowned with battlements. It has nine gates leading into the city, the most spectacular of which is the Alcázar Gate. It was declared a National Monument in 1884.
