Puente sobre el río Sella, Oviedo

The bridge known as the Roman Bridge of Cangas de Onís, also called ‘Puente Vieyu’ or ‘Puentón’, is one of the most iconic symbols of the Principality of Asturias.

Although it is possible that this site was already used in Roman times to ford the River Sella, and that this was the reason for the founding of Cangas de Onís, the first capital of the Kingdom of Asturias, the truth is that the present-day ‘Roman Bridge’ actually dates from the medieval period, possibly the late 13th century.

Its slender, graceful form and the design of its arches reflect the Romanesque style in transition to the Gothic.

It features three slightly pointed arches, the central one being much larger and cambered, beneath which the river flows; the other two, which flank it, are of unequal size. Hanging from the central arch is a reproduction of the famous Cross of Victory, a piece of goldsmith’s work from the early 10th century that is kept in Oviedo Cathedral.
