Lonja de la Seda, Valencia

The Lonja was built, for the most part, between 1482 and 1492, under the supervision of the master stonemason Pere Compte. The fact that the work was completed by one of his pupils following his death explains the presence of Renaissance elements.

The Silk Exchange has been regarded as one of the finest examples of European civil Gothic architecture. Its resemblance to ancient medieval castles lies in the imposing, fortress-like appearance conferred by its stone walls.

It consists of four parts: the Tower, the Sala del Consulado del Mar, the Patio de los Naranjos and the Salón de las Columnas. The complex covers an area of over 2,000 square metres, comprising both built-up and open spaces. On Sundays, there is also an exhibition of coins and stamps.
