Conjunto arqueológico de Itálica, Sevilla

The Roman city of Italica was founded in 206 BC on the initiative of Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus. Under Augustus, Italica became a municipality and was granted the right to mint coins. The emperors Trajan and Hadrian were born there.

Itálica enjoyed a period of splendour which led to its architectural development, with the construction of new public buildings such as the amphitheatre, houses with mosaic-decorated floors, and wide streets connecting the various neighbourhoods. Archaeological excavations began between 1751 and 1755, carried out by Francisco de Bruna.

Archaeological work has continued uninterrupted from then until the present day. These remains were declared an Archaeological Site by Decree of the Regional Government of Andalusia in 1989.
