Palacio Real (Madrid)

The Royal Palace of Madrid was built in the 18th century, on the orders of Philip V, on the site of the former Alcázar, which had previously been a Muslim castle.
Sachetti began work in 1738, and it was completed in 1764. Sabatini designed the south-east wing and the grand staircase, or staircase of honour. The building has a square floor plan with a large central courtyard. The Prince’s Gate, on the east side of the building, provides access to the central courtyard.
The Sabatini Gardens and Campo del Moro are further attractions of the palace, as are all its façades. There is some debate as to which architectural style it belongs to; depending on the author, some lean more towards the Baroque and others towards the Neoclassical.
There are numerous interior rooms, the most notable of which include the Hall of the Halberdiers, the Hall of Columns, the Hall of Mirrors and King Charles III’s Chamber, amongst many others. Paintings by Velázquez, Goya, Rubens, El Greco and Caravaggio can be admired here.
