The castle is situated on the highest point of the town. It was built by the Knights Templar on the ruins of the ancient Arab citadel. The castle was constructed with walls of hewn stone. Most of the rooms are covered by barrel vaults.
It is a sober and solid structure. Pope Luna, following his move to Peñíscola in 1411, converted the castle into a palace and a papal library.
