Colegiata de Santillana del Mar, Santander

The church has its origins in a monastery dating back to 870 which, according to tradition, housed the relics of Saint Juliana.

During the 11th century it was converted into a collegiate church, although the present building dates from the 12th century. It comprises three naves, with a dome, a transept, three semicircular apses and a tower. The transept and apses still retain their original barrel vaults.

Of particular note is the sculptural decoration of the façade, the capitals and the cloister. Inside, one can see medieval tombs and Romanesque reliefs from the 11th and 12th centuries.

The high altar features a 17th-century embossed silver frontal, beneath which lies another Romanesque altar. The altarpiece is the work of a master craftsman from Burgos, dating from the early 16th century. A late-Gothic predella and a Baroque image of Saint Juliana flanked by two Solomonic columns were added later. The main façade features a Byzantine Pantocrator and an atrium flanked by two lions.
