This building was once a Christian royal residence, then the seat of the Tribunal of the Holy Office, later a civilian prison and, finally, a military prison. It boasts magnificent gardens, such as the ‘Paseo de los Reyes’, where statues of all the kings associated with the Alcázar stand.
It was declared a Historic Monument in 1931. It forms part of the area designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1994. Its gardens are protected under the 1986 General Urban Development Plan (P.G.O.U.). It stands on the ruins of the ancient Caliphate Alcázar.
