The Elche Palm Grove is the largest palm grove in Europe. Although it has existed since prehistoric times, it was during the Muslim period that it reached its peak of splendour, as the Muslims organised the palm grove into orchards and developed its cultivation to the full.
The area that has survived around the historic centre, with over 200,000 palm trees, is known as the Historic Palm Grove and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a testament to the cultural transmission from East to West and to the survival of an exceptional irrigation system inherited from the culture of Al-Andalus.
Today, visitors can explore the Municipal Park (featuring distinctive buildings and neo-Arabic-inspired fountains), the Huerto del Cura (designated a National Artistic Garden), the Palm Grove Museum (located in the Huerto de San Plácido) and the Palm Grove Trail (which winds through traditional palm groves and the Filet de Fora Palm Grove).
