El cerro Calderico y sus doce molinos, Toledo

Windmills such as these in Consuegra were the inspiration for Miguel de Cervantes’ famous episode of the battle with the giants in his *Don Quixote de la Mancha*.

Calderico Hill is a rocky ridge rising above the La Mancha plain. There stands the Castle of La Muela, or Consuegra Castle, of Muslim origin but modified and extended during the 12th century by the Order of St John of Jerusalem.

It consists of three defensive enclosures and has been restored in recent decades. However, this hill is best known for being home to twelve of the thirteen traditional windmills it once had, all of which were named after characters from the immortal work *Don Quixote*.

Four of them still have their machinery in good working order. Of particular note is the 16th-century Molino Sancho, the setting for the Fiesta de la Rosa del Azafrán in Consuegra.
