This art gallery in Madrid houses the most comprehensive collection of Spanish paintings from the 11th to the 18th centuries, as well as many masterpieces by great painters of universal renown, such as El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Hieronymus Bosch, Titian, Van Dyck and Rembrandt.
Thanks to the quality and variety of its collection, the Prado Museum is one of the finest in the world. It brings together the finest collection of Spanish paintings, the most important works of Flemish and Italian painting, and notable examples from the German, French and English schools.
In its galleries, visitors can admire great masterpieces of world art such as Velázquez’s *Las Meninas*, Goya’s *Las Majas*, El Greco’s *The Gentleman with his Hand on his Chest*, Bosch’s *The Garden of Earthly Delights* and Rubens’s *The Three Graces*, amongst many other paintings of inestimable value.
Although the museum was established to house paintings and sculptures, it also possesses significant collections of drawings, engravings, coins and medals, as well as pieces of sumptuary and decorative arts.
The museum’s floor area increased by more than 50 per cent in 2007 following the extension designed by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo.
The new space includes four galleries for temporary exhibitions, the restored cloister of the Church of Los Jerónimos, a large reception hall for visitors, an auditorium with a capacity for 438 people, as well as various facilities for the storage and restoration of works of art.
Outside, the monumental bronze doors by Cristina Iglesias and the Tuscan boxwood garden are particularly striking.
