Jardín del Príncipe, Madrid

The Prince’s Garden is a unique example of the ‘landscape style’ in a Spanish royal garden. It was commissioned by the Prince of Asturias, the future King Charles IV. Its creation spanned the years 1772 to 1804.

The first plan of the garden bears the signature of Pablo Boutelou, although the extent of Juan de Villanueva’s involvement in the design is unknown, as he was responsible for the minor architectural features.

It has a relatively formal layout, with orthogonally arranged paths, into which various elements have been incorporated to complete the repertoire of landscape aesthetics: a pond with its Chinese-style pavilion, a hill with a chapel, the mock tomb in the lake, a grotto, some mock ruins, etc.
