The town of Sos del Rey Católico, designated a Historic-Artistic Site, is one of the most fascinating medieval towns and architectural centres in the Spanish Pyrenees.
The town of Sos is situated on a rocky spur and is surrounded by Gothic walls, which in some sections merge with the buildings themselves, of which seven gateways remain: Fuente Alta or de la Reina (the most notable, beneath a crenellated trapezoidal tower); Jaca and Nador, beneath a defensive tower; Zaragoza, flanked by two towers; El Mudo (the only one with a pointed arch), flanked by a turret; Uncastillo and Bueno, of which only the arch with its voussoirs remains.
The castle, originally dating from the 12th century and subsequently altered, stands on a slight inland promontory.
It has an irregular floor plan, featuring a turret with arrow slits and, at its centre, the slender keep, which has a square floor plan measuring 6 metres on each side and is topped with battlements.
