The former Sant Pau Hospital was designed and built by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner as a garden city, so that patients could stroll peacefully around its large square. Opened in 1930, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and is considered the largest Modernist complex in the world.
In 2009, the hospital moved to new premises, leaving the old site as a venue for tourism and leisure, with some of its pavilions now housing exhibition spaces and institutions.
