Jardín de Cactus
Jardín de Cactus · Lanzarote
Por Spain ·

The Cactus Garden is situated in a former quarry where coarse volcanic sand, or ‘picón’, was extracted; this was used by early growers of prickly pears (plants of the cactus family) to retain the soil’s night-time moisture.
The artist César Manrique recognised the potential of this site to transform a derelict space into a unique terraced garden where more than 500 species of cacti are cultivated and meticulously categorised.
The complex, which bears Manrique’s unmistakable stamp, is dominated by a windmill formerly used for grinding maize and restored for educational purposes.
