Anfiteatro Romano de Tarragona
Anfiteatro Romano · Tarragona
Por Spain ·

Built in the 2nd century AD on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, the amphitheatre was the venue for various popular spectacles, such as gladiatorial combats. It features the characteristic elliptical layout typical of this type of structure.
Beneath the arena, where the spectacles took place, there are pits that served as ancillary facilities. In the central part of the amphitheatre, the remains of the floor plan of a Visigothic basilica (6th century) and those of a 12th-century Romanesque-Gothic church are preserved. It forms part of the Tarraco archaeological complex, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
