Aínsa, Huesca

The capital of the ancient kingdom of Sobrarbe, which was incorporated into the Kingdom of Aragon in the 11th century, the town is a magnificent example of medieval urban planning.

The town of Ainsa, designated a Historic-Artistic Site, features a uniform and tightly packed ensemble of houses in its old town that is remarkably harmonious, with the slender tower of the Collegiate Church and the vast castle grounds – almost as large as the rest of the town – standing out. It has almost entirely preserved the walls that once surrounded it and is brimming with monuments that transport us back to the Middle Ages.

Next to the square, with arcades on both sides, stands the Romanesque church of Santa María, dating from the first half of the 11th century. Here we can admire its façade, an interesting crypt and its tower, which dominates the townscape.

Somewhat later is the cloister, built in the mid-13th century. In the north-west of the town centre, the citadel remains. It originated as a pentagonal tower, built in the mid-11th century and integrated into the defensive system against the Muslim threat.

This fortress was subsequently restored in the late 16th century, when the present-day citadel was built as part of the defensive system along the border with France. To commemorate the reconquest of the town, a re-enactment of the Moors and Christians known as ‘La Morisma’ is held in September.
