The church of the Royal Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles is built in the French Gothic style, modelled on Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
King Sancho VII commissioned the construction of this collegiate church in the 13th century as the church of the Roncesvalles hospitaller order, whose purpose was to assist pilgrims on the Way of St James after they had crossed the Pyrenees.Of particular note are the cloister, the Chapel of St Augustine, the Chapel of St James and the crypt. The crypt consists of a straight section with a barrel vault and a pentagonal apse.
Its walls and vaults are covered with 13th-century murals. The artistic treasure of the Royal Collegiate Church is housed in a room set up as a museum. The most interesting section is that of the gold and silverwork, which is displayed in six display cases.
Highlights include Charlemagne’s chess set, a Renaissance silver casket and a silver-plated wooden carving of the Virgin and Child. A number of paintings, books and sculptures are also on display.
