Monasterio de Suso de San Millán de la Cogolla, Logroño

The Monastery of Suso was the setting for the first words spoken in Castilian and also for the first poems written in our language. It was declared a World Heritage Site on 4 December 1997.

The cenobium, the heart of the monastery, is Visigothic in style and was built in the year 550, making it one of the oldest in Spain. Saint Millán performed his Lenten penances in its caves.

In the 10th century, it was inhabited by Mozarabic monks; the horseshoe arch at its entrance and the square chapels inside date from that period. The building consists of two naves, separated by horseshoe arches.

In the year 964, the first encyclopaedic dictionary of the Iberian Peninsula was compiled: the Codex Emilianense 46. In the 13th century, Gonzalo de Berceo wrote the first poems in the Spanish language. His remains lie in the Romanesque chapel.
