Basílica de la Sagrada Familia, Barcelona

In 1883, the brilliant Gaudí agreed to take charge of this project, succeeding Francisco de Paula. The artist worked on it until his death.

Work is still ongoing today to complete this basilica. The first architect to begin the project designed a Neo-Gothic building, but upon his death, Gaudí took over, respecting the original plans whilst soon imprinting his own character and style on the work.

He left only the Chapel of Saint Joseph, the crypt and the Nativity façade completed. The façades and the entire exterior feature a profusion of decorative elements in striking colours. There is a cryptogram on the Passion façade.

In 2026, following the completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ, standing 172.5 metres tall, the Sagrada Família will become the tallest church in the world and the tallest building in the city of Barcelona.
