Monasterio de Yuso de San Millán de la Cogolla · Logroño
Por Spain ·

The library housed in Yuso is one of the most important in Spain, not so much for the number of documents it holds, but for their value and age. It was declared a World Heritage Site on 4 December 1997.
The church, with three naves, dates from the 16th century. Inside, it features Corinthian columns and paintings by Juan Rizzi. The high altarpiece dates from the 17th century, the pulpit is Plateresque in style and the choir is Greco-Roman in style.
The sacristy dates from the 16th century and features original 18th-century frescoes on the ceiling. Its library contains over 300 documents dating from the 11th to the 15th centuries, including incunabula and codices from the 12th and 13th centuries, amongst others. The chronicles recount that, during the transfer of the relics of Saint Millán to the Monastery of Santa María la Real, the oxen pulling the cart stopped at a certain point and there was no way of making them move on.
King García Sánchez took this as a sign and had the monastery built on that spot.
