It is of Islamic origin and has undergone numerous transformations. Inside, it houses the Holy True Cross of Caravaca. The Sanctuary of the True Cross is notable for its Baroque façade, added in the 18th century and crafted from local marble.
It is situated within the walled enclosure of the Real Alcázar, which served as a fortress for both the Knights Templar and the Order of St James, and within which 14 towers of varying shapes and sizes now stand.
