The Tower of Hercules is situated between Orzán Cove and the Gulf of Ártabro. It is a Roman lighthouse from the ancient city of Brigantium. It dates from the 2nd century AD, during the reign of Trajan, and was renovated in 1788 on the orders of King Charles IV. It was designed by the Lusitanian architect Gaius Sergius Lupo.
It has a square floor plan, stands 68 metres tall, and its light can be seen at sea from a distance of 32 miles. The tower is divided into three sections, each progressively narrower, leading up to the lantern.
You have to climb a total of 234 steps to reach the top of the lighthouse, but the effort is well worth it as you are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the coast of A Coruña. According to mythology, Hercules cut off Geryon’s head and erected the monument after burying his mortal remains beneath it.
