It was the Sultan’s country residence, the market garden that supplied the palaces, and a place of recreation for the nobility.
The effect of a vast orchard was achieved by diverting the River Darro through canals to the Generalife. The Patio de la Acequia is a place of great beauty and colour, and serves as the entrance to the complex.
The building comprises two wings situated at either end of a large courtyard, with a pool in the centre. Nestled on the slope of the Cerro del Sol is the Generalife’s recreational courtyard, which was built during the 13th and 14th centuries. The views from here are of extraordinary beauty.
