Real Monasterio de Santa María de Guadalupe
Real Monasterio de Santa María de Guadalupe · Cáceres
Por Spain ·

The building stands on the spot where the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd. The monastic complex consists of four parts: the basilica, the auditorium building, the Mudejar cloister and the Gothic cloister. It is in the Gothic-Mudejar style and is flanked by eight towers, notably the Tower of Saint Anne and the Porter’s Tower.
The altarpiece of the high altar is of great beauty and is carved from wood. The tabernacle was originally a 16th-century writing desk belonging to Philip II. The 18th-century choir stalls are two-tiered and of excellent design. The sacristy is lavishly decorated.
The Chapel of Saint Jerome houses one of Zurbarán’s most important works, ‘The Apotheosis of Saint Jerome’. The monastery was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also houses the Embroidery Museum, an important collection of illuminated manuscripts and another collection of paintings by Zurbarán.
