Basílica de Santa María del Mar, Barcelona

It is one of the finest examples of 14th-century Catalan Gothic architecture. It was designed by the architect Berenguer de Montagut and served as the church for the shipowners and merchants of Gothic-era Barcelona.

Viewed from the outside, it has a solid and robust appearance, dominated by straight lines. The interior consists of three naves, with an ambulatory but no transept. The enormous height of the central nave, with its majestic octagonal columns, is particularly striking.

On the site where the church now stands, there was, during the 4th–6th centuries, a Roman necropolis which came to light during excavations in the 1960s.
